What are Edibles?
You may have heard of edible cannabis as an alternative for those who want to reap the benefits of medical marijuana without having to smoke or vape it. Edibles can take on a variety of forms – from tasty drinks to various candies and treats or even oral spray. As a quality product that can offer guaranteed cannabis content, edibles give those who are squeamish about smoking an easy way to medicate.
How Does It Work?
To understand how edibles are made, it’s important first to know that cannabis is fat soluble, which means it dissolves best in oils as opposed to water. As a result, cannabis is typically mixed with cooking oil or butter, which is then used to make a variety of delicious treats. You can purchase pre-made edibles or make your own at home, but it’s important to go easy on the edibles until you know the manufacturer or the recipe well enough to feel certain about the cannabis content.
How Much Is a Dose?
Just because an edible comes as an entire cookie or chocolate bar doesn’t mean the entire thing is meant to be eaten in one sitting. Typically, 10 grams of cannabis is considered a single dose, but those new to edibles might want to start with half that amount or even less. Note that even if you’ve developed a high tolerance for smoking or vaping medical marijuana, edibles are processed via a completely different system in your body, so even if you’re not a newbie your digestive system is.
Tips for Success
It might seem like common sense to start slow, but because of the way edibles work it’s easy to get in over your head. Edibles must be processed by your digestive system before you’ll start to feel any effect, which means you need to be patient! Effects can take anywhere from 30 to 90 minutes to start. The good news is that the effects will also stick around much longer – up to 12 hours – which is obviously beneficial for medical marijuana patients.
Whether you are new to dispensary edibles or medical marijuana entirely, here are a few tips to help you stay safe.
- Eat a meal before you medicate;
- Start with a minimum dose and wait two hours before eating more;
- Don’t try to eat to correct an overdose, as it can actually force your system to digest the cannabis faster.
